SXSW Film & TV Festival Photos: ‘Fall Guy,’ ‘The Gutter’ & ‘Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie’ World Premieres On Day 5

Filmmakers and festival attendees are in Austin for the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival to celebrate the convergence of the tech, film and music industries across various programming formats and special events. The fest runs March 8-16.

Now in its 31st year, fest-goers can expect red-carpet premieres from Film, TV, Documentary and Spotlight events with talent expected to participate across all platforms. 

Today’s world premieres on Day 2 of the fest feature Season 3 of the popular HBO show Hacks, starring Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, alongside My Dead Friend Zoe, starring Sonequa Martin-Green, Natalie Morales, and Ed Harris. The film follows Merit, a U.S. Army Afghanistan veteran, as she navigates familial tensions exacerbated by the presence of Zoe, her deceased best friend from the Army.

Other premiers will include the narrative short, Learning English from director Jean Liu; Babes, starring Ilana Glazer, Michelle Buteau, John Carroll Lynch, Hasan Minhaj; Daisy Ridley, Kate Solomon, Sam Yates, Tom Bateman, Matilda Lutz and Shazad Latif at the Magpie premiere; Bob Trevino Likes It starring Barbie Ferreira and John Leguizamo & Y2K with Rachel Zegler, Jaeden Martell, Julian Dennison.

Director Doug Liman’s film Road House, premiered at the Paramount Theatre on Friday, March 9, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Dalton – originally played by Patrick Swayze in the 1989 cult classic, reimagines the story of an ex-UFC fighter who becomes a bouncer at a scenic Florida Keys bar, only to uncover that paradise isn’t as it appears. The cast includes Jessica Williams, Post Malone, Conor McGregor, Lukas Gage, Arturo Castro, Catfish Jean, and Travis Van Winkle.

Stormy Daniels attended the World Premier of Stormy, from director and producer Sarah Gibson, the Peacock Original documentary delves into the life and times of Daniels, as she shares her story and account of events that have become part of American history. The film takes the audience behind the curtain as Stormy navigates being a mother, an artist, and an advocate working hard to reinvent herself, while still grappling with the bombshell that went off in her life five years earlier surrounding her encounter with Donald Trump.

World Premieres in the narrative competition category will roll out throughout the fest and will include The Fall Guy; Audrey; Ben and Suzanne; A Reunion in 4 Parts; The Black Sea; Bob Trevino Likes It; Mamifera; We Strangers; We Were Dangerous and We’re All Gonna Die.

Speakers today included Katie Couric, Errin Haines, Meghan Markle, Nancy Wang Yuen, and Brooke Shields at the “Keynote: Breaking Barriers, Shaping Narratives: How Women Lead On and Off the Screen,” and Trevor Noah at Vox Media Podcast Stage. Elon Musk, Sue Kroll, Todd Howard, Jonathan Nolan, Athena Wickham, James Altman, Graham Wagner, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet attended the Fallout SXSW party.

In addition to film & TV festival screenings, there will be a wide full range of events during SXSW including Conference Keynotes, Featured Speakers, Mentor Sessions, Networking Meet Ups, Music Showcases, Comedy Festival Showcases, Exhibitions and Professional Development. 

The Narrative Feature Competition, the Documentary Feature Competition, Poster Design, and Special Awards will be announced on Wednesday, March 13 along with all the Short Film Program winners, eligible for Jury Awards within their respective screening categories.
