Scene 2 Seen Podcast: Little Marvin And Luke James On ‘Them’ Season 2 & The Cultural Impact Of The Horror Genre

TV

Hello, and welcome to the Scene 2 Seen Podcast!

Showrunner, writer and executive producer Little Marvin, and actor-singer Luke James, chat about the second season of Prime Video‘s Them: The Scare on today’s episode. The series’ cast also includes Deborah Ayorinde (Riches, Harriet) and Pam Grier (Foxy Brown, Bones, Ghost of Mars, Jackie Brown).

Them: The Scare will once again be set in Los Angeles (the first installment, subtitled Covenant, took place in Compton circa 1952, while the new season will move the time frame forward to 1991). The story centers on LAPD Homicide Detective Dawn Reeve (Ayorinde), who is assigned to a new case: the gruesome murder of a foster home mother that has left even the most hardened detectives shaken. Navigating a tumultuous time in Los Angeles, with a city on the razor’s edge of chaos, Dawn is determined to stop the killer. But as she draws closer to the truth, something ominous and malevolent grips her and her family.

Little Marvin’s production company Odd Man Out, signed an overall deal with Amazon Studios to create and produce original series and films for Prime Video.

James, a two-time Grammy nominee, currently stars in the Showtime drama series The Chi, and his credits include the Fox series Star, HBO’s Insecure, USA’s Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G., and as Johnny Gill on BET’s The Bobby Brown Story and in The New Edition Story. He also starred in Universal’s comedy Little opposite Issa Rae, Regina Hall and Marsai Martin. He recently was on Broadway in Keenan Scott II’s play Thoughts of a Colored Man, which explores a single day in the heart of Brooklyn.

In this episode, Little Marvin and James discuss what it takes to be a showrunner, why character-driven stories are important, and the cultural impact of the horror genre.

A PERSONAL NOTE: This is officially the last episode of Scene 2 Seen with me as host. It has been a pleasure to talk with such high-caliber guests who have held the ears of a loyal listener base looking to learn more about their favorite celebrities. Deadline has given me a platform to make my voice heard and give marginalized talent the opportunity to speak their mind.
