By Throwing Shae Off Her Trail on Matlock Season 1 Episode 11, Matty May Have Called Even Worse Attention To Herself

Spoilers
Critic’s Rating: 4 / 5.0

Madeline Matlock might move a little slower than her coworkers, but her mind is a storage room of mental weapons. Matty shut down Shae so fast that I’m surprised the jury consultant didn’t get whiplash.

And how cute was Edwin undercover down in Georgia? As far as twists go, that one was a non-starter, but the series gets points for having fun with it.

Unfortunately for Madeline Matlock, she may have just put herself right in the path of the bull’s horns by trying to cover her own tracks.

Nothing says suspicious like removing the person asking the most questions about you, especially when that person has connections in high and possibly corrupt places.

Speaking of corruption, the case in “A Traitor in Thine Own House” took a backseat to everything else in this episode.

How Can Anyone on Matlock Focus with That Much Handsome in One Episode?

First of all, the clients were way too attractive. I was thoroughly distracted, no matter how much of an eyeroll Tod’s “Alcohol is poison” stance was. Have you ever been the only sober person in a room full of drunk people? It’s not fun.

However, I’m always happy to see Christopher Gorham in any role he takes. Sure, he’s not a household name by any means, but that handsome face is always welcome on my TV screen.

His ridiculously attractive features aside, he’s an amazing actor who has had a successful TV career since the late ’90s.

If you’re a TV Fanatic, you likely remember him from one of the MANY shows he has appeared on, whether as a cast member or guest star.

For me, my first experience with him was in the early days back when The CW was still The WB and he was on a little show called Popular about the politics of navigating high school.

Imagine my surprise when he transitioned into adult roles like in Ugly Betty, Insatiable, and Covert Affairs where he was not shy about taking his shirt off.

It’s always the nice guys that secretly have gym memberships — I’m looking at you, NCIS: Origins‘ Randy.

He has a fantastic acting range, but it helps to have abs on deck just in case the writing and dialogue are subpar. This is television, after all.

Still, even with all the handsome hunks in this episode, all that male energy took a backseat to the women running the show.

Sarah Only Got in Her Own Way, And In Doing So, Lost an Important Person in Her life

Sarah was not having a good time on Matlock Season 1 Episode 11, and even though I truly like the character, she just has herself to blame.

Not only did her obsession prevent her from doing her job correctly, but it also led to her losing the one person she could always count on to be in her corner.

It’s nuts that the show was able to make us feel bad for Sarah and Billy (David Del Rio) at the same time. That’s quality writing and exactly why this series is making its way through the awards circuit.

Billy had every right to set boundaries with Sarah. She had the audacity to say there was no chance he could possibly be a better lawyer than her.

I’m sorry, but if Sarah (Leah Lewis) had been a true friend, she would have celebrated Billy and his win rather than making the entire situation about herself.

Still, Sarah is a great character when she isn’t getting in her own way. Her breakdown to Olympia did bring me and probably most viewers back around to liking her.

I’m just glad I wasn’t Olympia in that situation because, like a rabid animal, Sarah jumped at the chance to ask Olympia to be her mentor. Hey, you miss one hundred percent of the shots you don’t take.

Sarah will have to reign in her crazy, though. “A Traitor in Thine Own House” was not a good look for her.

Plus, as Shae said, the Victorian language and staring at Matty in the rain was “truly unhinged.” Although, Shae doesn’t have much room to talk.

Matlock’s Nosiest Jury Consultant Just Got Herself into Some How Water in More Ways Than She Realizes

If you read the breakdown of the Matlock suspects, you know I have been keeping my eye on Shae for quite some time now. She’s another one who got in her own way.

If she had just minded her own business and left Matty alone, Shae (Yael Grobglas) would not have ended up in the hot seat with Matty and now HR gunning for her.

She flew all the way to Georgia to talk to an “old colleague” of Matty’s just to have the tables turned on her.

While I’m on board with Matty (Kathy Bates) moving Shae to the top of her list, I’m still a little confused as to how exactly Shae’s background in marketing played a role in the Welbrexa cover-up.

How exactly did the marketing supercharge the opioid epidemic? I’m having trouble seeing how the dots connect, so feel free to sound off in the comments if you have any insight.

One thing that came out of left field was Senior confronting Matty about the situation at the end of the episode. Matty even said it herself, “What has she got on you?”

My hat is off to Beau Bridges because he sent shivers down my spine with the way he looked at Matty.

I don’t know how many times I have to say it, but Senior didn’t get to where he is by being the sweet, flannel-wearing golf lover that he portrays himself as.

Matty isn’t the only one who can play the senile card. And all the while, Olympia has no idea she is caught between two vipers.

Olympia Has No Idea How Right She Was When She Called Jacobson Moore a Viper’s Nest

Honestly, my heart goes out to Olympia for all the things she doesn’t realize are happening to her.

Matty has been using and manipulating Olympia for quite some time.

On Matlock Season 1 Episode 10, Matty set Miss Lawrence on the warpath by making her think Julian was spying on her with that pen.

To be fair, I am also quite curious about where Julian got that large sum of money to buy their brownstone. It wouldn’t be so diabolical if Matty and Olympia weren’t best friends at this point.

It’s obvious that Olympia trusts Matty as one of her closest confidants to the point that even Madeline Kingston is having a crisis of faith.

I guess it all boiled down to what Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) and Senior both said: “A little bit of bad for a whole lot of good.”

That should be hanging in every lawyer’s office. Or, at least, on a T-shirt.

Do you think Senior is gunning for Matty now?

What are your thoughts on Matty using her friendship with Olympia to her advantage? Do the ends justify the means?
