Update: Netflix released the full trailer for Season 2 of The Diplomat early in October ahead of the second installment’s debut on the streamer on Halloween.
U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) has a new adversary in Season 2 of The Diplomat — but at least her husband is still around to continue helping her navigate the thorny landscape of global politics.
The Diplomat premiered on Netflix in April 2023 and spent multiple weeks at No. 1 on the streamer’s most-watched series list. It was quickly renewed for Season 2.
In April, as part of the White House Correspondents’ Association weekend that leads into the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Deadline gathered Cahn, Russell and Sewell for an Electionline panel event hosted by the Irish ambassador to the U.S. Geraldine Byrne Nason.

Guests included Samantha Power, Anthony Fauci, Minnesota governor and now Democratic VP candidate Tim Walz and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN).
A teaser for the upcoming installment, released in September, finally revealed to audiences that Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) is alive after an explosion in the heart of London at the end of Season 1 put his life in danger.
He might be a little banged up, but he’s standing tall next to his wife as she heads into a gala, met by the icy eyes of Vice President Grace Penn, played by Alison Janney, who is billed as a guest star this season.
According to Netflix, Season 2 will see Kate dig deeper into the attack in London and the previous attack of a British aircraft carrier off the coast of Iran, which she now knows came from inside the British government rather than from a foreign adversary.
In her quest, she faces a fraught marriage, a complex dynamic with British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), and a threatening visit from Janney’s VP character.
Alongside the trailer, Netflix also released some photos from Season 2, which are below. The Diplomat returns on October 31.
From creator, showrunner, and executive producer Debora Cahn, The Diplomat also stars Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh. It is executive produced by Janice Williams, Alex Graves, and Keri Russell.
