Roy Wood Jr. Prepping Stand-Up Special For Hulu

Hulu announced on Wednesday that Roy Wood Jr. (The Daily Show) will tape his first comedy special for the streamer at the Lincoln Theatre in Washington, D.C. in early September, seeing it launch on Hulu and Disney+ internationally.

The as-yet-untitled special comes on the heels of three for Comedy Central: Imperfect Messenger (2021), No One Loves You (2019) and Father Figure (2017). Its title and launch date will be announced down the road. c. craig will direct, with Mainstay Entertainment and Jax Media producing. When it premieres, the special will be part of Hulu’s newly ramped up presence in comedy, which includes monthly stand-up special launches.

A comedian, Emmy-nominated documentary producer and WGA-nominated writer, Wood is best known for his eight years serving as a correspondent for Comedy Central’s Emmy-winning late-night satire The Daily Show. In 2023, he guest hosted the show and headlined the White House Correspondents’ Dinner to its highest ratings since 2017.

Previously co-starring opposite Jon Hamm in Paramount Pictures’ Fletch remake, Confess, Fletch, Wood has also made guest appearances on Only Murders in the Building, Better Call Saul and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Next up, he’ll appear alongside Keanu Reeves and Jonah Hill in the upcoming dark comedy Outcome, which Hill is directing and producing for Apple TV+. Recently, he also partnered with Crown Publishing to pen a memoir, The Man of Many Fathers, which will be released in 2025.

Hulu’s doubling down on comedy officially begins in November with the launch of a new special from Jim Gaffigan. Also recently announcing a forthcoming special from Bill Burr, the streamer will be back with news on further new hours at a later date. As part of its new comedy initiative, Hulu will also launch a curated collection of licensed stand-up specials ranging from iconic comedy specials to recent releases from 800 Pound Gorilla and Comedy Dynamics, among others.
